Jobless Rate Dips, Inflation Soars

It would be difficult to imagine a week with a more critical pair of economic statistics for the UK calendar apart from the Q4 2009 GDP number which was dispatched at the end of January. The 3,000 fall for Q4 2009 may not be much, but is the rational result of the 0.1% GDP growth over the period that we learnt of on January 26th. A much more shocking figure for savers was the January CPI number, the most important measure of inflation, had risen by 3.5%
